An entire season came down to last weekend as the Idaho Junior Steelheads swept a four-games series against arch-rival and number-one ranked Fresno Monsters.<br />
With the four-game win, Idaho (38-5-0-3OTL) is now just two points behind the Monsters in the race to win the Western Division of the Western States Hockey League.<br />
&#8220;I don&#8217;t think any of us expected this to happen; it&#8217;s given our team a lot of confidence, and we now believe we can beat any team in this league,&#8221; head coach John Olver said.<br />
The Junior Steelheads have three games left to play against the San Diego Gulls this weekend in San Diego to finish out the 52-game WSHL regular season.<br />
&#8220;We control our own destiny, but we have to win our final games against Gulls to win our division,&#8221; Olver said.<br />
If Idaho wins all three games, the Junior Steelheads would be seeded first against fourth-ranked San Diego for round one of the WSHL playoffs to be played Friday, Feb. 26, in McCall and Feb. 27-28 in Boise, Olver said.<br />
Should the Junior Steelies lose any games this weekend, they would take second place in the Western Division and most likely play the Phoenix Polar Bears in Idaho.<br />
IDAHO 2, FRESNO 1<br />
Idaho brought Fresno&#8217;s 11-game winning streak to an end with a 2-1 win before a crowd of about 450 in attendance at Manchester Ice and Event Centre on Friday night.<br />
Both teams were evenly matched and after a scoreless first period, Fresno jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the second period.<br />
Idaho struggled to find the back of the net until the third period when Nate Stanley stole the puck away from the Monsters at mid ice, skated in and scored between the Fresno goalie&#8217;s legs to tie the game 1-1.<br />
With 38 seconds left on the clock, Idaho&#8217;s Patrick Anderson tapped in a goal to give the Junior Steelheads the 2-1 victory.<br />
IDAHO 6, FRESNO 5 &#8211; OT<br />
It was standing room only as an estimated 750 ticket holders watched the Junior Steelies hand Fresno a 6-5 second-straight loss in overtime for game two of the series in McCall.<br />
Again, Fresno scored first to lead 2-0 through the start of the second period. Idaho&#8217;s David Fegler scored on a power-play to make it 2-1 headed into the final period.<br />
The Monsters and Junior Steelheads went almost goal-for-goal as both teams battled to take control of the game.<br />
Idaho&#8217;s Victor Karlsson scored with three minutes, 37 seconds left and gave the Junior Steelies a 5-4 lead. Seconds later, the Monsters scored to tie it 5-5 and sent the game into overtime.<br />
With less than 90 seconds left on the clock, Idaho&#8217;s Justin Videen took the puck wide and threw it hard at the net to score before an electrified crowd in McCall.<br />
IDAHO 6, FRESNO 3<br />
The Monsters started out strong with a 2-0 lead in the first period for game three on St. Valentine&#8217;s Day in front of about 500 hockey lovers in McCall.<br />
The Junior Steelies deep bench scored three goals in the second period and turned a tied game in Idaho&#8217;s favor, as center Marshall Weber sailed one into the Fresno net early in the second period to give Idaho a 3-2 lead.<br />
&#8220;Zaid (Hussein) threw it to me and then I threw it on net &#8211; there was a rebound and it seemed like I was the only one there and I just put it in; it felt really good to finally know we were up a goal,&#8221; Weber said.<br />
The Junior Steelheads added three more goals to easily outscore Fresno 6-3.<br />
IDAHO 3, FRESNO 2 &#8211; OT<br />
This time Idaho gained a 2-0 lead over Fresno at the end of the first period for the final game at Qwest Arena in Boise with more than 2,200 in attendance.</div>
<div>Fresno scored in the second period and again in the third to tie it up 2-2. With seconds left to go, Idaho&#8217;s Videen appeared to have scored the winning goal, but the net was knocked off its moorings by a Fresno player and ruled no goal. <br />
Less than 30 seconds into overtime, Gabe Gollette scored off an assist from Stanley and Karlsson and Idaho clinched victory 3-2 to sweep the four-game series over Fresno.</div>

The Idaho Junior Steelheads conquered the Valencia Flyers from California, sweeping a three-game series at its home venues last weekend.<br />
Currently in second place in the Western Division of the Western States Hockey League, Idaho (33-5-0-3OTL) will face their toughest opponent to date, the number one ranked Fresno Monsters in an epic four-game series this weekend in McCall and Boise.<br />
IDAHO 4, VALENCIA 3<br />
Idaho scored first in game one on Friday at Idaho Ice World in Boise, after which the Flyers took off and scored two goals to take the lead, 2-1.<br />
With 90 seconds left in the first period, the Junior Steelheads shot one in to the back of the net to make it 2-2 at the end of the first period.<br />
After a scoreless second period, both teams scored a goal apiece and the third period ended with a 3-3 tie and sent the game in to a 4-on-4 overtime.<br />
Idaho&#8217;s David Feggler scored off an assist by Greg Chapman and Tyson Cox to win it, 4-3, in OT.<br />
IDAHO 8, VALENCIA 2<br />
The Junior Steelheads got off to a slow start in game two on Saturday at Manchester Ice and Event Centre.<br />
Valencia scored the first goal in game two to lead 1-0 through much of the first period. Idaho stayed the course and came back to score three goals and take control of the game 3-1.<br />
&#8220;We found our legs about mid-way through the first period, tied it up and then took the lead with a couple of late goals &#8211; our team stayed composed and just stuck with it,&#8221; Idaho Junior Steelheads head coach John Olver said.<br />
The Junior Steelies kept the momentum going and scored three more goals in the second period before the Flyers would find the back of the net once more to end the second period up 6-2.<br />
Idaho defenseman Ryan Maul ran into the boards towards the end of the third period and was later helped off the ice by teammates.<br />
&#8220;Ryan hit his knee, hopefully it&#8217;s just a bruise and he will be OK,&#8221; Olver said.<br />
Idaho added two additional goals in the third period to defeat Valencia 8-2.<br />
Justin Videen was the night&#8217;s top scorer for the Junior Steelies with two goals.<br />
IDAHO 3, VALENCIA 2<br />
Both teams were tied after the first period in game three on Sunday back in Boise.<br />
The Junior Steelheads scored goals in the second and third periods to take the lead 3-1. The Flyers shot one in with about two minutes left in the final period, but couldn&#8217;t catch Idaho as time ran out.<br />
The Junior Steelheads wrapped the final match-up with a 3-2 win to get the best of Valencia in the three game series.</div>

<div>Idaho Junior Steelheads&#8217; left-winger Victor Karlsson had beaten the</div>

<div>With a flick of the wrist, Karlsson backhanded a shot over the</div>

<div>lead over the Flyers.</div>
<div>&#8220;It was actually one of the nicest goals I&#8217;ve had since coming here,&#8221;</div>
<div>Karlsson said after the Junior Steelheads defeated Valencia, 8-2, on</div>
<div>Saturday at Manchester Ice and Event Centre in McCall.</div>
<div>This is Karlsson&#8217;s third season playing hockey &#8220;here&#8221; in the United States.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Minnesota to Texas</div>
<div>The Stockholm, Sweden, native began his hockey career around age 6</div>
<div>and was 17 years old when his family supported Karlsson&#8217;s decision to</div>
<div>come to the U.S., where he played hockey for Cloquet High School in</div>
<div>Minnesota.</div>
<div>&#8220;I always wanted to come to America for the high school experience,</div>
<div>and I was lucky enough to play for one of the top high school hockey</div>
<div>teams in the country,&#8221; he said.</div>
<div>Before becoming an Idaho Junior Steelhead, Karlsson played in the</div>
<div>North American Hockey League for the Wichita Falls Wildcats in Texas.</div>
<div>Now 20 years old, the 6-foot-1 import is one of the Western States</div>
<div>Hockey League&#8217;s top 20 players who&#8217;s about to make a goal of his own</div>
<div>- to play college hockey.</div>
<div>&#8220;Victor&#8217;s had a great year, and he&#8217;s got the well-deserved attention</div>
<div>from schools; he&#8217;s going to be a good college hockey player,&#8221; Junior</div>
<div>Steelheads head coach John Olver said.</div>
<div>&#8220;He&#8217;s had some NCAA Division III schools make him some offers, so</div>
<div>right now he&#8217;s in the process of trying to decide where he&#8217;s going to</div>
<div>go,&#8221; Olver said.</div>
<div>McCall Mountaineers hockey player Christian Widen and his family</div>
<div>billet Karlsson when Idaho plays in McCall.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Smart on the Ice</div>
<div>Widen, a McCall resident who also hails from a small town outside</div>
<div>Stockholm, says he&#8217;s impressed with Karlsson&#8217;s maturity and</div>
<div>intelligence on the ice.</div>
<div>&#8220;He makes decisions that are good for the team, and he&#8217;s mature in</div>
<div>the sense that he doesn&#8217;t have a big head about his own game,&#8221; Widen</div>
<div>said.</div>
<div>Karlsson also is has strong puck-handling skills, which is unusual</div>
<div>for someone of his size, Widen said.</div>
<div>Karlsson brings a lot of finesse with his game, Olver said.</div>
<div>&#8220;Along the boards and in the corner, he just always seems to come up</div>
<div>with the puck &#8211; always,&#8221; Olver said.</div>
<div>Many Swedish hockey players stay home and work their way up the</div>
<div>European leagues before moving on to the NHL, but Karlsson&#8217;s personal</div>
<div>goals are clear.</div>
<div>&#8220;I want to go to college, play hockey and do well, and then after</div>
<div>that, maybe play pro somewhere in Europe,&#8221; he said.</div>
<div>Until then, he&#8217;s content to stay in the U.S.</div>
<div>&#8220;I don&#8217;t regret anything &#8211; I&#8217;ve come here and I love it,&#8221; Karlsson said.</div>
