For The Star-News
An entire season came down to last weekend as the Idaho Junior Steelheads swept a four-games series against arch-rival and number-one ranked Fresno Monsters.
With the four-game win, Idaho (38-5-0-3OTL) is now just two points behind the Monsters in the race to win the Western Division of the Western States Hockey League.
“I don’t think any of us expected this to happen; it’s given our team a lot of confidence, and we now believe we can beat any team in this league,” head coach John Olver said.
The Junior Steelheads have three games left to play against the San Diego Gulls this weekend in San Diego to finish out the 52-game WSHL regular season.
“We control our own destiny, but we have to win our final games against Gulls to win our division,” Olver said.
If Idaho wins all three games, the Junior Steelheads would be seeded first against fourth-ranked San Diego for round one of the WSHL playoffs to be played Friday, Feb. 26, in McCall and Feb. 27-28 in Boise, Olver said.
Should the Junior Steelies lose any games this weekend, they would take second place in the Western Division and most likely play the Phoenix Polar Bears in Idaho.
IDAHO 2, FRESNO 1
Idaho brought Fresno’s 11-game winning streak to an end with a 2-1 win before a crowd of about 450 in attendance at Manchester Ice and Event Centre on Friday night.
Both teams were evenly matched and after a scoreless first period, Fresno jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the second period.
Idaho struggled to find the back of the net until the third period when Nate Stanley stole the puck away from the Monsters at mid ice, skated in and scored between the Fresno goalie’s legs to tie the game 1-1.
With 38 seconds left on the clock, Idaho’s Patrick Anderson tapped in a goal to give the Junior Steelheads the 2-1 victory.
IDAHO 6, FRESNO 5 – OT
It was standing room only as an estimated 750 ticket holders watched the Junior Steelies hand Fresno a 6-5 second-straight loss in overtime for game two of the series in McCall.
Again, Fresno scored first to lead 2-0 through the start of the second period. Idaho’s David Fegler scored on a power-play to make it 2-1 headed into the final period.
The Monsters and Junior Steelheads went almost goal-for-goal as both teams battled to take control of the game.
Idaho’s Victor Karlsson scored with three minutes, 37 seconds left and gave the Junior Steelies a 5-4 lead. Seconds later, the Monsters scored to tie it 5-5 and sent the game into overtime.
With less than 90 seconds left on the clock, Idaho’s Justin Videen took the puck wide and threw it hard at the net to score before an electrified crowd in McCall.
IDAHO 6, FRESNO 3
The Monsters started out strong with a 2-0 lead in the first period for game three on St. Valentine’s Day in front of about 500 hockey lovers in McCall.
The Junior Steelies deep bench scored three goals in the second period and turned a tied game in Idaho’s favor, as center Marshall Weber sailed one into the Fresno net early in the second period to give Idaho a 3-2 lead.
“Zaid (Hussein) threw it to me and then I threw it on net – there was a rebound and it seemed like I was the only one there and I just put it in; it felt really good to finally know we were up a goal,” Weber said.
The Junior Steelheads added three more goals to easily outscore Fresno 6-3.
IDAHO 3, FRESNO 2 – OT
This time Idaho gained a 2-0 lead over Fresno at the end of the first period for the final game at Qwest Arena in Boise with more than 2,200 in attendance.

Fresno scored in the second period and again in the third to tie it up 2-2. With seconds left to go, Idaho’s Videen appeared to have scored the winning goal, but the net was knocked off its moorings by a Fresno player and ruled no goal.
Less than 30 seconds into overtime, Gabe Gollette scored off an assist from Stanley and Karlsson and Idaho clinched victory 3-2 to sweep the four-game series over Fresno.

The Idaho Junior Steelheads conquered the Valencia Flyers from California, sweeping a three-game series at its home venues last weekend.
Currently in second place in the Western Division of the Western States Hockey League, Idaho (33-5-0-3OTL) will face their toughest opponent to date, the number one ranked Fresno Monsters in an epic four-game series this weekend in McCall and Boise.
IDAHO 4, VALENCIA 3
Idaho scored first in game one on Friday at Idaho Ice World in Boise, after which the Flyers took off and scored two goals to take the lead, 2-1.
With 90 seconds left in the first period, the Junior Steelheads shot one in to the back of the net to make it 2-2 at the end of the first period.
After a scoreless second period, both teams scored a goal apiece and the third period ended with a 3-3 tie and sent the game in to a 4-on-4 overtime.
Idaho’s David Feggler scored off an assist by Greg Chapman and Tyson Cox to win it, 4-3, in OT.
IDAHO 8, VALENCIA 2
The Junior Steelheads got off to a slow start in game two on Saturday at Manchester Ice and Event Centre.
Valencia scored the first goal in game two to lead 1-0 through much of the first period. Idaho stayed the course and came back to score three goals and take control of the game 3-1.
“We found our legs about mid-way through the first period, tied it up and then took the lead with a couple of late goals – our team stayed composed and just stuck with it,” Idaho Junior Steelheads head coach John Olver said.
The Junior Steelies kept the momentum going and scored three more goals in the second period before the Flyers would find the back of the net once more to end the second period up 6-2.
Idaho defenseman Ryan Maul ran into the boards towards the end of the third period and was later helped off the ice by teammates.
“Ryan hit his knee, hopefully it’s just a bruise and he will be OK,” Olver said.
Idaho added two additional goals in the third period to defeat Valencia 8-2.
Justin Videen was the night’s top scorer for the Junior Steelies with two goals.
IDAHO 3, VALENCIA 2
Both teams were tied after the first period in game three on Sunday back in Boise.
The Junior Steelheads scored goals in the second and third periods to take the lead 3-1. The Flyers shot one in with about two minutes left in the final period, but couldn’t catch Idaho as time ran out.
The Junior Steelheads wrapped the final match-up with a 3-2 win to get the best of Valencia in the three game series.

lead over the Flyers.

“It was actually one of the nicest goals I’ve had since coming here,”

Karlsson said after the Junior Steelheads defeated Valencia, 8-2, on

Saturday at Manchester Ice and Event Centre in McCall.

This is Karlsson’s third season playing hockey “here” in the United States.

Minnesota to Texas

The Stockholm, Sweden, native began his hockey career around age 6

and was 17 years old when his family supported Karlsson’s decision to

come to the U.S., where he played hockey for Cloquet High School in

Minnesota.

“I always wanted to come to America for the high school experience,

and I was lucky enough to play for one of the top high school hockey

teams in the country,” he said.

Before becoming an Idaho Junior Steelhead, Karlsson played in the

North American Hockey League for the Wichita Falls Wildcats in Texas.

Now 20 years old, the 6-foot-1 import is one of the Western States

Hockey League’s top 20 players who’s about to make a goal of his own

- to play college hockey.

“Victor’s had a great year, and he’s got the well-deserved attention

from schools; he’s going to be a good college hockey player,” Junior

Steelheads head coach John Olver said.

“He’s had some NCAA Division III schools make him some offers, so

right now he’s in the process of trying to decide where he’s going to

go,” Olver said.

McCall Mountaineers hockey player Christian Widen and his family

billet Karlsson when Idaho plays in McCall.

Smart on the Ice

Widen, a McCall resident who also hails from a small town outside

Stockholm, says he’s impressed with Karlsson’s maturity and

intelligence on the ice.

“He makes decisions that are good for the team, and he’s mature in

the sense that he doesn’t have a big head about his own game,” Widen

said.

Karlsson also is has strong puck-handling skills, which is unusual

for someone of his size, Widen said.

Karlsson brings a lot of finesse with his game, Olver said.

“Along the boards and in the corner, he just always seems to come up

with the puck – always,” Olver said.

Many Swedish hockey players stay home and work their way up the

European leagues before moving on to the NHL, but Karlsson’s personal

goals are clear.

“I want to go to college, play hockey and do well, and then after

that, maybe play pro somewhere in Europe,” he said.

Until then, he’s content to stay in the U.S.

“I don’t regret anything – I’ve come here and I love it,” Karlsson said.

More than 500 junior hockey fans combined attended the Friday and

Saturday night games at Manchester Ice and Event Centre.

Currently in second place in the Western Division of the Western

States Hockey League, Idaho has tallied an impressive 29 wins, two

losses, zero ties and three overtime losses so far this season.

IDAHO 13, ARIZONA 1

The Junior Steelies got off to a fast start to take a 4-0 lead at the

end of the first period.

Idaho tallied a whopping 10 additional goals in both the second and

third periods. Arizona’s only goal of the night was scored late in

the third period. Idaho crushed the Redhawks on Friday night with a

stunning final score of 13-1.

The Junior Steelheads had 60 shots on goal compared to Arizona’s 23

attempts to find the back of the net.

IDAHO 7, ARIZONA 0

Game two got off to a rocky start for both teams when Idaho’s K.C.

Fraize received a penalty for elbowing and was ejected 30 seconds

after the game started.

The check knocked Arizona forward Kelly Duke unconscious, and he was

taken by ambulance to McCall Memorial Hospital.

“Kelly is OK; however, he will be out for the next couple of games

due to the concussion he received on Saturday,” said John Barth,

McCall business manager for the Idaho Junior Steelheads.

With Fraize out of the game, Idaho was forced to do some major

maneuvering with its offensive lines.

“Losing Fraize only left us with 11 forwards which meant we didn’t

have even lines, so we were always throwing out different players

with different combinations,” Idaho Steelheads head coach John Olver

said.

The Junior Steelies were ahead 1-0 halfway into the second period

when Idaho’s Nate Stanley of Meridian scored a goal assisted by

fellow co-captain Tyson Cox of Boise and Victor Karlsson from Sweden.

“I thought we were able to turn a switch on midway through the second

period; Nate got a big goal for us, and we really started to find our

groove,” Olver said.

Idaho turned up the heat and scored five more goals in the second and

third periods to defeat Arizona, 7-0.

Stanley went on to lead Idaho in scoring with a hat trick and one assist.

“My favorite goal was the third one,” Stanley said. “Tyson (Cox)

passed it up to Mike (Michael Washington) from the point, and then

Mike saw me backdoor and all I had to do was leave my stick on the

ice and go to the net.”

IDAHO 7, ARIZONA 1

Idaho out skated the Redhawks in the final game of the series on

Sunday at Idaho Ice World in Boise.

The Junior Steelheads had 53 shots on goal compared to Arizona’s 26

attempts to score.

Idaho’s Justin Videen, who hails from Boise, was the game’s top

scorer with two goals and one assist.

This weekend, the Idaho Junior Steelheads travel to California to

play the Fresno Monsters, currently ranked number one in the Western

Division of the WSHL.

“Those games (against Fresno) are without question the biggest games

of the year, so we’re going to lay it all on the line and I’m

confident our team’s going to show up and play to our potential,”

rushes on defense early in the first period.

The Junior Steelheads were tied 1-1 when Idaho’s K.C. Fraize, who

hails from Upland, Calif., and fellow linesman Marshall Weber of

Boise both added goals in the first period to give Idaho a 3-1 edge.

“We were a little bit rusty in the first period; however, we were

able to tinker with our offense and the line of (Zaid) Hussein,

Fraize and Weber really responded,” Olver said.

The Junior Steelheads piled on four more goals in the second period

to make it 7-1. Fraize added his second goal of the night with a

beautiful backhand shot between the goalie’s legs to score.

“Zaid (Hussein) passed the puck to me, I wheeled around and the only

shot I had was my backhand, so I went with it and it went in,” Fraize

said.

Hussein, Fraize and Weber scored four of the Idaho’s nine goals to

give the Junior Steelheads the win, 9-2, over Bakersfield.

“We obviously created a lot of offense and anytime you score nine

goals, you’ve had a good night offensively,” Olver said.

IDAHO 11, BAKERSFIELD 1

The Junior Steelies crushed the Condors 11-1 in game two at McCall on

Saturday. Bakersfield’s only goal of the game was scored during a

penalty kill less than minute after the game started. Idaho fired

back with three goals in net to finish out the first period, 3-1.

The Junior Steelheads added three more goals to make it 6-1 in the

second period. Bakersfield racked up 60 minutes in penalties,

compared to Idaho’s 20 minutes.

“Bakersfield has lost a lot of games this year; clearly their team’s

frustrated with their season, and I think it showed this weekend,”

Olver said.

Idaho slammed the door shut-tight on the Condors in the third period

with an additional five goals for the final 11-1 victory.

Idaho’s Tyson Cox of Boise led his team with four assists. Teammates

Justin Videen, also from Boise, and Patrick Anderson of Bismarck, N.

D., each scored two goals apiece.

IDAHO 8, BAKERSFIELD 1

Idaho once again out-played Bakersfield on Sunday in game three of

the series at Idaho Ice World in Boise.

In the first period, the Junior Steelheads were up 3-0 when

Bakersfield scored its first and only goal of the game. Idaho racked

up three more goals in the second period and two goals in the final

period to win 8-1 and sweep the three-game series over the Condors.

The Junior Steelheads had 55 shots on goal compared to Bakersfield’s

10 attempts to find the back of the net.

The Idaho Junior Steelheads were the Only Undefeated Team to play at the WSHL League Showcase in Las Vegas December 17th-20th. We played the Western Division San Diego Gulls and won 3-2. Goals were scored by Washington, Karlsson and Stanley. This was the first team we played this Inaugural Season so, it was a sweet win. Next we played the Mid-West Division #1 El Paso Rhinos and we beat them in a Shut-Out 2-0. Goals were scored by Karlsson and Chapman. It was a great, great game and we played like the Pros. Special thanks to Goalie Brown for the Shut-Out. Then we took on the 4th place in the West Division, Phoenix Polar Bears. They were the League Champions last year and we beat them 2-1 in a Shoot-Out situation. Goal was scored by Maul. (And just a note: Phoenix beat El Paso 3-1 so you know what that says about our win!) Lastly we played the Mid-West Division Colorado Bison and beat them handily at 5-1. Goals were scored by Karlsson, Stanley, Hayes and 2 for Videen. It was a great weekend with over 35 fans there for our team alone. We feel like we cheered them on to victory. From Moms and Dads to Nieces and Nephews and family friends…it was a great time had by all. The Fans were treated to a dinner at the PF Changs restaurant at Planet Hollywood on Friday night hosted by the Swigert Foundation. It was good to get to meet everyone and put names with faces. Thank you much to Darrell and Elaine.

The team played some of the best hockey we have yet played. The intensity was amazing as the passes were right to the sticks and the team played as a unit. J.O., stated that the El Paso game was one of the best hockey games he has ever seen any team play ever…not just our team! This was a great compliment to our team from a Coach who has been coaching for 28 years in the sport. You can all download the games from FastHockey.com if you want to watch some great hockey.

Our team is really coming together at the perfect time in the season and if you realize that we are a fist year team the chemistry is simply amazing. Coach has really taught these young men the mental aspect of the game as they never get frustrated and they have an answer and plan for every puck handling chance they get on the ice and their Dry Land training is really showing in their agility and their ability to play at top performance all the way to the end of the games. Other teams, as was obvious at this Showcase, are not at the same level as our players. All this, and our team has one of the lowest penalty minutes of any team in the WSHL.

As was mentioned before…you again have another reason to be extremely proud of the Idaho Junior Steelheads and their Coach John Olver!

JUST DROP THE PUCK!!

Your Idaho Junior Steelheads are back after a Holiday Break and they are ready to take on the remaining Division teams in 15 remaining games. The IJS were just coming off five straight wins at the Las Vegas Showcase and even after a 2 week break they were still in top shape and tournament level skills. This team has great composure on the ice and great team chemistry on and off the ice. We played to our level of play even though the score was so telling of our level of play compared with the Condors. The McCall crowd and fans were great as they filled the stands both nights. Thanks to the many generous families in the community that hosted 13 of our team members. The team really appreciates all the fans in McCall and how they always make the IJS team feel most welcome. We look forward to next weekend as well…

Shoot-Out!

BY KYLA SAWYER

For The Star-News

In a six-round shoot-out and with the crowd on their feet, the Idaho Junior Steelheads captured their first season win, 6-5, over the San Diego Gulls during their inaugural game at Manchester Ice and Event Centre Saturday night. “It was fantastic! Fantastic! said John Barth, McCall business manager for the Steelheads. “Given the fact we were competing with other sporting events on TV that night, to have 500 people come watch these guys – Wow! It’s a big deal for McCall,” Barth said.
The Steelheads are composed of young men aged 16 to 20 with lightning-fast feet, hard hits and excellent skills on the ice. They are also hungry for a chance to make it to the next level either playing for a college or pro hockey team. Right from the start, both teams charged the ice. San Diego scored first, and eight seconds later, Idaho center Luke Hayes answered back with a goal off an assist from Tyson Cox of Boise. Although Idaho did a good job keeping the puck in its zone, both teams would each add another goal. As the teams headed to the locker room at the end of the first period, the Steelheads and San Diego were tied, 2-2. “I didn’t feel the score was indicative of the play, and I thought we deserved a better fate,” head coach John Olver said after the game. “I told the team not to focus on the scoreboard, but to focus on executing our game plan,” Olver said. In the second period, San Diego scored for a 3-2 lead before the Steelies stepped up their game. Idaho’s Nate Stanley of Boise beat the Gulls’ goalie short-side to score unassisted. A minute and a half later, Idaho’s Hayes, who hails from Mission Viejo, Calif., scored his second goal of the night to put the Junior Steelheads ahead, 4-3. Less than 30 seconds into the third period, Idaho’s Gabe Gollette of Orange, Calif., would score on a power play to give the Junior Steelheads a two-goal lead.
A relentless San Diego took advantage of all opportunities to score on a penalty kill. Then with less than a minute to go on the clock, the Gulls pulled their goalie and scored again to make it 5-5 and send the game in to overtime. “We let San Diego back in the game and made it very hard for ourselves,” Olver said. Neither team scored in the overtime, sending the game in to a shoot-out. The crowd at the ice rink gasped and cheered as the teams traded five rounds of either missing both shot or making both shots, forcing another round. In the sixth go-round of the shoot-out, with the Gulls having missed their shot, Gollette skated down the ice, faked far side, and then fired in the winning goal between the San Diego goalie’s legs to capture the Junior Steelheads’ first season win. “I’m proud of the way our team stuck in there; they didn’t give up; they kept fighting,” Olver said. “We had stretches where we played extremely well, and we had some stretches where we made a lot of mistakes.”
The Junior Steelheads will play 10 more home games in McCall, the next double-header against the Phoenix Polar Bears, Nov. 13-14. Steelheads split other two games with Gulls The Idaho Junior Steelheads split its other two games last weekend against the San Diego Gulls. The Steelheads lost a close first match-up against the Gulls, 2-1, on Friday night at Idaho Ice World in Boise. Idaho scored the first goal of the game early in the second period. However San Diego scored a power play goal later in the second period to tie the game, 1-1. The Steelheads’ penalties may have contributed to how close the game was played. Idaho played short-handed for 16 minutes for the entire game. San Diego scored its winning goal in the final seconds of the third period to win, 2-1. Neither team wanted to lose in the final game of their three-game series on Sunday at Idaho Ice World. San Diego scored first, but Idaho came back to score two goals in the second period and take the lead, 2-1. The next 20 minutes were a tug of war. Both teams found the net again and again. At the end of the third, the score was tied 5-5 sending the game into overtime. After a scoreless five minute overtime, the teams went into a shoot-out during the second overtime, just as they did the previous night in McCall. The Steelheads scored once and San Diego scored three times to win 7-5 and get the best of the Junior Steelheads in the three-game series.
