Returning from a three-week break,
the Idaho Junior Steelheads
convincingly defeated the Bakersfield
Junior Condors in a three-game
series in McCall and Boise last weekend.
“We knew that if we played to our potential we would handle
Bakersfield,” Idaho Junior Steelheads head coach John Olver said.
With a record of 26 wins, two losses, zero ties and three overtime
losses, Idaho maintains their current second place standing in the
Western Division of the Western States Hockey League.
The Junior Steelheads hope to continue their winning streak when they
play the Arizona Redhawks this weekend. Arizona is currently in last
place in the Western Division of the WSHL.
“Looking at the standings, obviously the Redhawks are a team we would
expect to beat this weekend, but no games are guaranteed
victories-you’ve got to earn them,” Olver said.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the puck drops at 7:30 p.m. both Friday
and Saturday at Manchester Ice and Event Centre in McCall and Sunday
at 11 a.m. at Idaho Ice World in Boise.
IDAHO 9, BAKERSFIELD 2
Idaho was slow to start at Manchester Ice and Event Centre on Friday
night against the Condors, allowing several turnovers and odd-man
rushes on defense early in the first period.
The Junior Steelheads were tied 1-1 when Idaho’s K.C. Fraize, who
hails from Upland, Calif., and fellow linesman Marshall Weber of
Boise both added goals in the first period to give Idaho a 3-1 edge.
“We were a little bit rusty in the first period; however, we were
able to tinker with our offense and the line of (Zaid) Hussein,
Fraize and Weber really responded,” Olver said.
The Junior Steelheads piled on four more goals in the second period
to make it 7-1. Fraize added his second goal of the night with a
beautiful backhand shot between the goalie’s legs to score.
“Zaid (Hussein) passed the puck to me, I wheeled around and the only
shot I had was my backhand, so I went with it and it went in,” Fraize
said.
Hussein, Fraize and Weber scored four of the Idaho’s nine goals to
give the Junior Steelheads the win, 9-2, over Bakersfield.
“We obviously created a lot of offense and anytime you score nine
goals, you’ve had a good night offensively,” Olver said.
IDAHO 11, BAKERSFIELD 1
The Junior Steelies crushed the Condors 11-1 in game two at McCall on
Saturday. Bakersfield’s only goal of the game was scored during a
penalty kill less than minute after the game started. Idaho fired
back with three goals in net to finish out the first period, 3-1.
The Junior Steelheads added three more goals to make it 6-1 in the
second period. Bakersfield racked up 60 minutes in penalties,
compared to Idaho’s 20 minutes.
“Bakersfield has lost a lot of games this year; clearly their team’s
frustrated with their season, and I think it showed this weekend,”
Olver said.
Idaho slammed the door shut-tight on the Condors in the third period
with an additional five goals for the final 11-1 victory.
Idaho’s Tyson Cox of Boise led his team with four assists. Teammates
Justin Videen, also from Boise, and Patrick Anderson of Bismarck, N.
D., each scored two goals apiece.
IDAHO 8, BAKERSFIELD 1
Idaho once again out-played Bakersfield on Sunday in game three of
the series at Idaho Ice World in Boise.
In the first period, the Junior Steelheads were up 3-0 when
Bakersfield scored its first and only goal of the game. Idaho racked
up three more goals in the second period and two goals in the final
period to win 8-1 and sweep the three-game series over the Condors.
The Junior Steelheads had 55 shots on goal compared to Bakersfield’s
10 attempts to find the back of the net.
